ACFA Statement on Picture Butte Feeder Co-operative and Support for Loan Guarantee Program
The Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association (ACFA) is aware of recent developments involving the Picture Butte
Feeder Co-operative (PBFC), following a comprehensive investigation by Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation’s Inspection
and Investigation Section.
The ACFA, while not empowered to intervene directly, is committed to supporting the integrity and transparency of the
Feeder Association Loan Guarantee Program (FALGP). We believe in a program that not only builds the industry, but also
champions grassroots initiatives and supports new entrants, fostering an environment conducive to expanding and
advancing the industry.
“Our members depend on a trustworthy and functional loan guarantee program. We support any actions that uphold
the program’s principles and ensure its continued success for cattle feeders across Alberta,” said Keith Gregory, ACFA
Chair.
Although the ACFA is concerned about recent events and their potential impact, we are not affiliated with the Feeder
Association of Alberta (FAA) and therefore do not have the mandate, authority, or standing to intervene in matters
related to PBFC or the FALGP. Our role remains focused on supporting the FALGP in the interest of our members and the
broader Alberta cattle feeding industry. We want to ensure this program remains viable and available to producers who
need it, ensuring the intent of the program continues to be met, which includes supporting new entrants, facilitating
sector growth, and helping to diversify the economy by providing access to effective, low-cost financing to small and
midsize livestock producers.
Producers affiliated with PBFC and other feeder associations are encouraged to engage with their associations and
relevant authorities to stay informed and help ensure the long-term sustainability of the program.
The cattle feeding industry has been built on the principles of integrity and accountability. The ACFA does not condone
any actions that violate established rules of any financial system or undermine the trust on which the industry depends.
Who Is ACFA
ACFA is an advocacy organization representing the interests of their voluntary members on a broad range of
government policies and economic issues impacting the competitiveness of beef production in Alberta.
ACFA influences policy decisions, identifies new technology, creates partnerships that stimulate new markets and economic opportunities, consults with producers on key industry issues and trends and initiates research programs to improve competitiveness.
ACFA is committed to harnessing opportunities for growth, sustainability and the competitiveness of cattle production across Alberta.
Who Is FAA
The Feeder Association of Alberta is a co-operative association with 45 local member associations throughout Alberta that provide affordable feeder and breeder financing.
The FAA is an easily accessible way for start-up producers, new entrants, and expanding farmer/feeders to help finance the growth of cattle in Alberta. The member associations provide funding with low equity along with supplementary or supporting programs that either in part or together help support existing feeders or give a helping hand to new producers in the industry. They work with government agencies, financial partners, and Local Feeders Associations (LFA) to implement programs designed to support grain farmers and feeder and breeder operations.
FAA does not hold oversight or a governance role for the LFA’s, but rather act as advocates for the program and the membership while liaising with government and industry.
