meet the team
This is the third post in our meet the team series, and this week we meet our new board chair, Martin Zuidhof.
Martin is a born and bred Albertan with farming in his blood. The son of Dutch immigrants, he grew up on a mixed farm in the Lacombe area, which his father eventually turned into a cattle feedlot and grain farm. Even as a child, Martin knew that he wanted to be a farmer and now he and his wife, Annette, own and operate the family feedlot and farm.
Martin has five children, and even though only one currently farms full-time, between them they have a cow calf operation comprising around 400 cows. With his children raising cattle, and Martin growing grain and operating the feedlot, it’s a well coordinated family operation!
Contributing to the industry
Martin has been involved with the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association since his early days in the industry, and as a board member for about five years – a role he’s proud to say benefits Alberta’s feedlot industry.
The association has a good sense of what’s important to the industry, and they do a good job of knowing what they should be working on.
Now, as the new chair, Martin looks forward to immersing himself in the new challenges and initiatives of the years ahead.
The spirit of adventure
When Martin’s not working he loves to travel with friends. He and Annette are fans of active vacations where they can enjoy the opportunity to see new places and experience new adventures. In 2015 they spent eight days in New York, and have also recently been on a boating/biking tour of Europe, stopping at places like Germany, Austria and Hungary.
I don’t like to put my feet up on vacation. In Europe we biked about 50 kilometres a day, in 38 degree heat, and I feel that if I’m lucky enough to have the health to be able to do that, and still feel good at the end of the day, then that’s what I should do.
That’s just the kind of energy that will serve him well in his new position with the ACFA. We look forward to working with him.
