How Alberta’s cattle feeders are investing in their communities

Last week we explained that Alberta’s cattle feeders are working to build public trust in four distinct ways. This week we’re going to discuss one of those ways: investing in people and communities.

As the Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association, it’s our job not just to promote the importance of community investment to our members, but also to provide information to the public about the initiatives we support.

Here are some of the ways that we help support cattle feeders and the communities they work in:

Farm safety

Our members want to create a safe workplace as much as anyone. After all, many of their workers and employees are their family members, friends and neighbours. In our policy on farm safety, we discuss the merits of alternative approaches, and explain our support for the recommendations of Alberta’s Farm Safety Advisory Council (FSAC).

Supporting sound business practice

In 2014 ACFA introduced the concept of a Business Risk Management curriculum at Lethbridge College, to help farmers adapt to the realities of today’s agricultural operation.

ACFA community investment

Our communities are important to us and, in 2015, ACFA supported several causes, including:

    • $6,700 raised for Kids Cancer Care.
    • Staff of ACFA and Alberta Beef Producers prepared a tasty beef dinner for families at Ronald MacDonald House.
    • We continue to partner with Olds College to administer the Dargis Family Scholarship, which makes an annual grant of $1000 to a first year student.

Cattle feeders’ community investment

Our members are actively involved in their own communities. Some examples include: Cattlewomen for the Cure raised $12,000 for War Amps at the Alberta Beef Industry Conference; KCL Cattle Company Ltd. donated 259 lbs of food to the Lethbridge Food Bank; and Van Raay Paskal Farms Ltd.’s event ‘Picture Butte Community Cancer Walk’ raised over $200,000 to help fund cancer research.
